A deep aubergine tussar silk saree with a red border that does not match it and is better for it.

The body is quiet. Small silver zari bootis sit in a wide repeat across the aubergine, far enough apart that you read the ground first and the motif second. Between them, soft blue rings are scattered at a lower contrast, almost sunk into the cloth. The tussar slub runs through everything, so even the plain stretches have texture to catch light.

Then the border arrives in a clear red, and the whole saree shifts. A row of gold zari kangura steps along the join, and the red opens into a wide band of gold zari jaal and floral work that carries up into the pallu. Aubergine and red is a harder pairing than aubergine and gold, and that is why it works.

Tussar is a wild silk. It has a drier hand than mulberry and a natural grain, so it holds shape and falls in heavier folds.

Handwoven in Varanasi.
