Handwoven Banarasi Katan Silk Kadwa Jangla Saree in Blush Pink — Khinkhwab

Silk First Aid: Rescuing a Saree from Spills

A spill on a silk saree is a heart-stopping moment — but a calm, quick response usually saves the day. Here’s what to do, and what never to do.

A precious Banarasi like this deserves careful handling — and calm first aid if a spill happens.

First: blot, don’t rub

Gently blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth from the outside of the stain inwards. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and can bruise the silk’s surface.

Go easy on water

Water itself can leave rings on silk. Use as little as possible, and never soak. For most fresh spills, careful blotting is safer than dousing.

Common spills

For oil or grease, a light dusting of talcum powder or cornflour can absorb it; leave it a while, then brush off. For tea or coffee, blot immediately. Avoid bleach, hot water and harsh detergents entirely — they damage silk and zari.

Know when to stop

For anything stubborn, or on a precious or zari-heavy saree, stop and take it to a silk specialist. A good dry-cleaner can do what home remedies can’t, and won’t risk the weave.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I spill something on a silk saree?

Blot gently from the outside in with a dry cloth, use as little water as possible, and for oil try a little talcum powder. Never rub, bleach or soak.

Can I remove a stain from a silk saree at home?

Light fresh spills, yes, with careful blotting. For stubborn stains or zari-heavy sarees, take it to a silk specialist rather than risk the weave.
