A deep sapphire blue katan silk saree handwoven in Varanasi. Small upright bootis are scattered across the body in staggered rows, each one a slim floral sprig worked in cream zari against the blue.

The tilfi skirt border is wide and built from arched motifs, every arch filled with a fine white lattice and ringed by flowering vines. Meenakari flowers in pink, orange, yellow and green sit along the vines, and gold zari bands with a fine red line close the border on both sides. The pallu carries the same arches massed across its full width over the same lattice ground.

Two techniques are doing the work here. Kadwa puts each booti in separately on its own small shuttle, with nothing carried behind it on the reverse. Tilfi runs three shuttles at once, one for each colour of resham, which is how a flower the size of a grain holds pink, orange and green at the same time.

Wear it to an evening wedding. Cream picks up the bootis, or deep blue keeps it tonal.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Fabric - Pure Banarasi Katan Silk.

Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirements giving a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads.

The Weaving Technique

Satin tanchoi weave is a traditional Indian hand weaving technique that uses a single or double warp and two to five colors on the weft to create lustrous silk fabric with intricate patterns. The fabric is characterized by its satin finish, which is achieved by weaving the warp threads over at least four weft threads at a time.

Satin tanchoi weavers use a variety of techniques to create intricate patterns, including jala (perforated paper or metal stencil), buti (embroidered motifs), and khari (gold or silver zari thread).

Satin tanchoi weaving is a complex and time-consuming process, but it produces a fabric that is both beautiful and durable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started
It is katan satin silk handwoven in Varanasi. The satin finish gives it a smooth sheen and enough weight to hold the drape.
Kadwa means each motif is woven in separately on its own small shuttle. The bootas sit clean against the ground with no threads trailing behind them.
Patta is the contrast border. Here the body is purple and the patta border and pallu are a bright red carrying gold zari bootas.
A red blouse carries the patta border through. A plain purple blouse lets the gold zari lead instead.
Dry clean only. Store it folded in soft muslin away from damp and direct sunlight and refold it every few months.
