A deep purple katan silk saree handwoven in Varanasi. Small floral sprays are scattered across the body, each worked in silver zari with touches of olive, orange and coral meena so the bootis carry colour without weight.

The floral border is the piece. Large roses sit in a row along its length, every one shaded in a different combination of olive, rust, coral and rose, with fine silver vines and leaves running between them. The pallu opens into a dense silver jaal of full blown roses across the purple ground, framed by the same rose border on both sides and closed with fine striped bands. A red selvedge runs along the outer edge.

Kadwa means each motif is woven in separately on its own small shuttle, with nothing carried behind it on the reverse. On a border this dense it is the slow way to work, and the reason the roses hold their shape instead of blurring into the ground.

Wear it to an evening wedding function. A plain purple blouse keeps it quiet, or olive picks up the meena in the border.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Fabric - Pure Banarasi Katan Silk.

Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirements giving a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads.

The Weaving Technique

Satin tanchoi weave is a traditional Indian hand weaving technique that uses a single or double warp and two to five colors on the weft to create lustrous silk fabric with intricate patterns. The fabric is characterized by its satin finish, which is achieved by weaving the warp threads over at least four weft threads at a time.

Satin tanchoi weavers use a variety of techniques to create intricate patterns, including jala (perforated paper or metal stencil), buti (embroidered motifs), and khari (gold or silver zari thread).

Satin tanchoi weaving is a complex and time-consuming process, but it produces a fabric that is both beautiful and durable.
