A deep magenta tanchoi saree handwoven in Varanasi. The body carries an all over jaal of scrolling vines and open rosettes, woven in a pale resham a few tones lighter than the ground, so the pattern reads as texture rather than contrast and the body softens to a mauve from a distance.

The mina borders run along both edges. Gold zari vines hold meenakari flowers in green, orange, blue, red and mustard, each one picked out in coloured resham against the magenta. The pallu opens onto a cream ground worked in a dense gold zari lattice, framed by the same mina border and closed with fine striped bands.

Tanchoi is woven with extra weft threads carried right across the width and bound into the ground as they go. That is what gives the jaal its density and keeps the reverse smooth, without the cut floats other techniques leave behind.

Wear it to an evening function. A magenta blouse keeps it tonal, or cream picks up the pallu.

The Weaving Technique

Weaving Technique – Tanchoi with Kadwa Border

The saree is woven using the Tanchoi weaving technique, where multiple silk threads are interlaced to create intricate patterns without any floats on the back, resulting in a smooth, tapestry-like texture. Complementing this is the Kadwa border, meticulously handwoven with silver zari threads — a hallmark of fine Banarasi craftsmanship that requires exceptional skill and patience.
