A vivid rani pink katan silk saree handwoven in Varanasi. The stripes running the length of the body are not woven lines but rows of small hexagonal rosettes, each one placed separately in gold zari, with the occasional motif picked out in blue, orange or yellow meenakari.

The border is a gold zari band of upright leaf motifs set between fine lines. The pallu turns to cream and gold with a dense honeycomb jaal, hexagons locked together across the full width and framed by the same leaf border on both sides.

Striping a saree this way is the slow route. A plain stripe runs off the loom in a single pass, but kadwa puts in every rosette on its own small shuttle with nothing carried behind it on the reverse. The line you see is built one motif at a time, which is why it holds its edge.

Wear it to a wedding function or a sangeet. Gold or cream picks up the pallu, and deep pink keeps it tonal.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Fabric - Pure Banarasi Katan Silk.

Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirements giving a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads.

The Weaving Technique

Satin tanchoi weave is a traditional Indian hand weaving technique that uses a single or double warp and two to five colors on the weft to create lustrous silk fabric with intricate patterns. The fabric is characterized by its satin finish, which is achieved by weaving the warp threads over at least four weft threads at a time.

Satin tanchoi weavers use a variety of techniques to create intricate patterns, including jala (perforated paper or metal stencil), buti (embroidered motifs), and khari (gold or silver zari thread).

Satin tanchoi weaving is a complex and time-consuming process, but it produces a fabric that is both beautiful and durable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started
It is katan satin silk handwoven in Varanasi. The satin finish gives it a smooth sheen and enough weight to hold the drape.
Kadwa means each motif is woven in separately on its own small shuttle. The bootas sit clean against the ground with no threads trailing behind them.
Patta is the contrast border. Here the body is purple and the patta border and pallu are a bright red carrying gold zari bootas.
A red blouse carries the patta border through. A plain purple blouse lets the gold zari lead instead.
