A vivid purple katan satin silk saree handwoven in Varanasi, the body ruled with fine zari patta running across its width. Gold zari floral bootas sit in staggered rows between the stripes, each a small spray of blossoms and leaves.

The border and pallu turn to a bright red. A single column of floral bootas runs the length of the border, framed by a scalloped zari edge and fine zari lines. The pallu carries the same bootas in closer rows, finishing with bands of fine zari stripes. A dark green selvedge runs along both edges.

Kadwa is the slowest of the Banarasi techniques. Each boota is woven in separately on its own small shuttle, so the motifs sit clean against the ground with no floating threads behind them. Satin katan silk gives the saree a smooth sheen and enough weight to hold the drape.

Wear it with a red blouse to carry the border through, or a plain purple one to let the zari lead.

Fabric - Pure Banarasi Katan Silk.

Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirements giving a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads.

The Weaving Technique

Satin tanchoi weave is a traditional Indian hand weaving technique that uses a single or double warp and two to five colors on the weft to create lustrous silk fabric with intricate patterns. The fabric is characterized by its satin finish, which is achieved by weaving the warp threads over at least four weft threads at a time.

Satin tanchoi weavers use a variety of techniques to create intricate patterns, including jala (perforated paper or metal stencil), buti (embroidered motifs), and khari (gold or silver zari thread).

Satin tanchoi weaving is a complex and time-consuming process, but it produces a fabric that is both beautiful and durable.
