Ajrakh Hand Block Modal Silk Stole in Rust Red

Large roundels cover the rust red ground of this modal silk hand block ajrakh stole. Each holds indigo scrolls curling around a dotted rosette within a ring of ivory dots, with small black and ivory diamonds between them. Both long edges carry a geometric border of black almond motifs, chevrons and small florals.

The end panel opens with the same border, then a wide band of scattered motifs: indigo leaves with a central spine, trefoil medallions, starflowers and clusters of small rings among fine sprays and dots. After a second border, a row of leaf-shaped motifs filled with indigo florals rises from a dense floral base, each tipped with a small sprig. Fine zigzag lines frame this row before the plain rust red end.

The name ajrakh is often linked to azraq, the Arabic word for blue, and indigo with red remains central to the craft in Sindh and Kutch. Each part of the pattern is laid down by hand with carved wooden blocks, so the lines carry small natural variations. The modal silk base feels smooth and drapes softly.

Wear it with an ivory, indigo or black kurta, or let the red brighten a plain white outfit.
