Hand Block Ajrakh Modal Silk Stole in Black

Ivory crosses set in stepped rust red frames form a geometric jaal on the black ground of this modal silk hand block ajrakh stole. Clusters of light blue almond shapes, small florets and red-centred rings fill the spaces between them. Both long edges carry a border of light blue rosettes and ivory fern sprigs, lined with rust red stripes dotted in ivory.

The end panel opens with the same rosette border, then a wide band of large four-petal flowers in alternating light blue and rust red, with small ivory diamonds between them. A second rosette border and a narrow band of square florets lead to tall pointed motifs filled with blue and red florals, rising into a plain black end.

In Sindh, an ajrakh is still offered to guests as a mark of honour, and geometry like these crosses and petal flowers runs through the craft's traditional designs. Every part of this pattern is pressed by hand from carved wooden blocks, so the lines keep the slight shifts of handwork. Modal silk gives the stole a smooth feel and a fluid drape.

Wear it over an ivory or light blue kurta, or with all black so the red and blue stand out.
