Hand Block Ajrakh Modal Silk Stole in Rust Red

A black trellis jaal of curving lines covers the rust red ground of this modal silk hand block ajrakh stole, with light blue floral sprigs and fine ivory dots filling each section. Both long edges carry a border of light blue almond motifs with black flower centres, framed by ivory sawtooth lines and plain black edges.

In the end panel, two almond borders frame a wide star lattice of interlaced ivory lines, with light blue stars and black accents on rust red. Next, leaf-shaped pendants filled with tiny blossoms hang in a row from a dense black floral band, with fine blue and ivory stripes leading to the plain black end.

Red, blue and black are the classic colours of ajrakh, the resist and dye craft of Sindh and Kutch, and its star lattices draw on Islamic geometric design. The pattern is built by hand one carved wooden block at a time, so small shifts in alignment are part of the piece. Modal silk gives it a smooth feel and a fluid drape.

Wear it over an ivory, grey or indigo kurta, or let the rust red lift an all-black outfit.
