Craft - Marodi Hand Embriodery
The process of marodi work starts with drawing a design on butter paper and imprinting it on the fabric with chalk. Then the fabric is placed in a wooden frame and a number of artisans work on the same fabric at once. The primary tool used in this work is the aari, an awl-shaped needle with a pointy top. The stitch used is the cobbler stitch with zari, a metallic coloured thread. The motifs commonly used are peacocoks, flowers, leaves and such traditional buttis. With the advent of the Mughal Dynasty, the motifs amalgamated into an Indo-Persian form of motifs, with more arches and paisley inspired motifs. The motifs are further decorated with gotas, sequins, pearls, stones and beads.
