Black and gold in a fine charkhana check — the kadiyal technique at its most precise. The body of this Katan silk is woven entirely in a gingham-style grid, the black warp and gold weft crossing at every thread to create a surface of clean, continuous check. There are no extra motifs, no supplementary weft — just the structure of the weave itself, a construction that requires the same precision as any Banarasi brocade and achieves its effect through geometry alone.

The border breaks into full colour — a wide hot pink ground carrying a dense meenakari floral bel of pomegranate butis, scrolling stems and blooms in orange, red, white, and gold zari. The contrast between the restrained black and gold body and the vivid pink meenakari border is the defining quality of this piece. The pallu is a fine honeycomb zari jaal in peach-gold tissue, geometric and luminous. A hot pink selvedge closes the edge.

The Weaving Technique

Weaving Technique – Kadiyal is one of the most distinctive weaving techniques in the Banarasi tradition. Unlike most Banarasi sarees where the pattern is created through supplementary weft threads laid over the ground, kadiyal builds its design into the very structure of the fabric — the warp and weft are woven in two different colours, and their intersection creates the check or grid pattern. No extra thread, no additional technique — just the precision of the weave itself.

The word kadiyal comes from the Hindi for edge or border — historically referring to sarees where the body and border were woven in contrasting colours on the same loom in a single continuous construction. A true kadiyal saree cannot be cut and reassembled; the contrast is woven in, not added on.
