The pallu makes this one. A woven mehraab rises on a pale tissue ground, holding a guldasta of dahlias in full bloom, their layered petals picked out in purple, orange and lilac meenakari, the kind of detail Banaras saves for its most patient work.

The field answers it quietly. Hand tied bandhani dots cluster inside a woven jaal of gold zari vines, so the hot pink georgette reads richly worked from a distance and rewards a closer look. Borders of large meenakari dahlias run the full length of the drape, and a plain pink end with a fine zari finish closes the piece.

Pair it with an ivory or gold suit to let the pallu lead, or drop it over deep purple for evening. Between the tied dots and the woven dahlias, this dupatta does the work of a far heavier piece without the weight.

THE WEAVING TECHNIQUE

Weave - Cutwork

The cutwork weave technique, also known as Jangla, embodies intricate artistry. It involves the intricate weaving of vegetation motifs like creepers, flowers, and birds, reminiscent of a jungle. These exquisite patterns are exclusively woven in gold and silver zari threads on a Jacquard loom, creating an opulent and ornate fabric.

Bandhani is a popular tie and dye technique that involves twisting, tying, and dyeing to produce some gorgeous patterns. Bandhani generally uses natural colours, predominantly yellow, blue, green and black. Each colour has its own significance. For example, red is a symbol of good fortune to a bride and yellow is a sign of spring time and joy. The designs on the fabric are formed by a combination of dots that are first block printed on the fabric. Some popular designs are the sikharibhat (jungle scene), ambaa dal (mango orchard) and chakalipopat (sparrow, parrot).
