PRODUCT DETAILS

Fabric – Pure Pashmina

Pashmina refers to a fine variant of spun cashmere the animal-hair fibre forming the downy undercoat of the Changthangi goat. The word pashm means "wool" in Persian, but in Kashmir pashm referred to the raw unspun wool of domesticated Changthangi goats.

The Weaving Technique

Kani shawl comes from Kanihama, a small village 20 kilometers away from the main city. Kanihama once had a monopoly over Kani shawls. It was later that artisans from other villages learned to make Kani shawls. Kanihama comes from two words, ‘Kani’ meaning wooden sticks, and ‘Hama’ meaning village. The craft of Kani weaving uses small sticks of wood called ‘Kanis’. Around Kanis, artisans wind colorful weft threads to create magical patterns over a shawl. Kanis is made of a type of forest wood called ‘poos tul’.
