A spill on a silk saree is a heart-stopping moment — but a calm, quick response usually saves the day. Here’s what to do, and what never to do.
First: blot, don’t rub
Gently blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth from the outside of the stain inwards. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and can bruise the silk’s surface.
Go easy on water
Water itself can leave rings on silk. Use as little as possible, and never soak. For most fresh spills, careful blotting is safer than dousing.
Common spills
For oil or grease, a light dusting of talcum powder or cornflour can absorb it; leave it a while, then brush off. For tea or coffee, blot immediately. Avoid bleach, hot water and harsh detergents entirely.
Know when to stop
For anything stubborn, or on a precious or zari-heavy saree, stop and take it to a silk specialist. A good dry-cleaner can do what home remedies can’t.
